The following recommendations have to be considered when you drive a car in Costa Rica.

Do not Park vehicles on the streets, because they can be stolen. Park your car in a paying parking lot. 60 percent of the stolen cars happen to unattended parked cars on the streets.
Use only authorized parking lots. If possible use security systems in your car.
Do not trust strangers that offer help out side the super markets, stadiums, teller machines or public buildings.
Do not leave your personal belongings inside the vehicle. The Car is not a safety deposit box. If you do keep an eye on them.
If you have a garage at home use it, do not leave your car out side the house with out proper surveillance.
Do not leave your car in dark and lonely places.
Try to have different locks for the doors and the ignition.
Expensive luxury car items are very attractive to thieves.
House robberies happen thru forced front and back doors.
House robberies happen between 6 P.M. and 9 P.M. Be aware during this time and take the necessary safety precautions.
Make the job difficult to the thieves.
Some safety precautions are: reinforced your front and back doors with the proper metal frame work. Do the same to the windows.
If you have to go out of your house, make sure to ask a relative or someone who you know very well and trust, to take care of it.
Be aware, thieves visit in advance neighborhoods to inquire and select the homes that are very vulnerable.
Work with your neighbors so they can report to the proper authorities the presence of strangers in your neighborhood when owners are not at home.
Leave with a reliable neighbor your personal telephone number where you can be available.
In case of an emergency call nine, one, one (911) or call the closer police station.
